Assembly is a mixed-use community building in Strathcona—one of Vancouver’s oldest and most character-rich neighborhoods. It includes 45 townhomes with a playground and shared amenities, set on a podium above local commercial and light industrial space. A mews divides the ground-floor shops, improving storefront visibility while creating a new public pedestrian link and gathering space for the community.
We selected two primary materials for the building: black brick on the exterior—a timeless material that weathers gracefully—and white corrugated metal on the interior, used to brighten the community spaces. In select areas of the façade, we introduced turned-brick detailing to create a secondary expression using the same material.
We also collaborated with local artist Ola Volo to create a bespoke ceiling graphic that subtly invites the public to explore the building and its shops.
